I did private teaching in London for a few years after I graduated from Thames Valley University. I have experience in teaching down syndrome student using the methods I designed myself. My student can play simple tunes with 2 hands after 3 months of taking lessons from me. I also used to give singing lessons to a teenager who is autistic. It gives me great a sense of achievement seeing these special children enjoy making music.
I do not spoon feed my students. I get them to talk about the music they play at lessons. This is to train them to listen to their own playing and comment on what they think of their performance. For high grades, we focus a lot on sound making and music interpretation. I also emphasise a lot on how to use our muscles correctly without injuring ourselves. this is not stressed by a lot of music teachers even though it is vital to know. As a pianist , I suffered from many years of injuries. I spent a long time doing research on the proper use of muscles i.e. playing naturally, be sensitive to what the body tells us when wrong muscles are being used or stressed. Many a time, it is not the problem of technique but wrong use of muscles which makes certain passages seem difficult to play.
