Tutoring Approach

I provide a personalised tuition programme either online or in the tutee's home and can also provide home schooling/ education during the day.  The tuition sessions are very structured and tailored to the needs and learning style of the student, focusing on any weaknesses. These needs are usually pinpointed within the first meeting and I tailor all sessions to the individual specific exam board.  I apply a variety of different teaching techniques and styles that I have found to be effective in order to make studying enjoyable, interesting as well as beneficial, helping students to reach and excel to their full potential.  My strategy in teaching addresses multiple areas to greatly benefit student's approach to learning which helps build their confidence. However, after just one session, Dr Lui was able to provide clear and invaluable guidance for my daughter to move forward on her project. Hi! I caught the teaching bug while working toward my physics degree at Harvard University and in the six years since, I have taught a diverse set of students: from 12 years old to 32, from academically precocious but bored to struggling to keep up. I have also taught mathematics, physics and computing using various curriculums including SPM, IGCSE, A level, IB, SAT and ACT. This has given me an appreciation for the wide range of abilities, interests and backgrounds that students have.

I am a firm believer that all students want to do better if they could and it is an educator’s job to figure out what is standing in their way. Thus, I approach my sessions with a wholistic and empathetic view of the student as an individual with needs and circumstances that our lessons have to fit. My first task is understanding where the student is at and setting goals collaboratively. Lessons are generally targeted to tackle deeper conceptual understanding as well as mastery of techniques but are always student-need focused. They will include frequent check-ins formal and informal to insure appropriate pace and depending on other workload the student may have, homework assignments designed to reinforce as well as prepare student for next sessions. I generally like keeping my sessions conversational and informal so my students can relax and do their best. I have had thought a few students before they sat for their SPM. I have a degree in education with major physics and minor mathemathics. I prefer more semi-modern approach to teaching whereas nowadays teachers are thought to be more of an facilitator than a teacher. But I found it to be not efficient in class during my internship. My proudest achievement was helping one of my students improve her Mathematics from D to A in 6 months. Together with her effort and determination to score well, she finally managed to get into the science stream class that she dreamt of in Form 4.
