I taught Korean exchange students aged 6-14 English, Maths and Science for 6 months. I was also a chemistry peer tutor in A levels; this entailed tutoring my fellow classmates with Chemistry topics that they struggled with. I received 7A*s and 3A's in my IGCSE, and was in the top ten percentile of my year. I was awarded a full scholarship for the entire of my A level studies and obtained 4A*s.
As a tutor, I want my students to have a deep understanding and be confident in answering exam questions and tackling new and unfamiliar problems. I believe that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which students are encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves. Having has one-to-one tuition myself in the past, I have come to find that it gives me the opportunity to resolve personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject and I hope my students can benefit from this too. From my time as a peer mentor, I have realised the importance of varying my approach depending on the student's needs and learning style. I encourage students to think for themselves, starting from topics that they are comfortable with and moving gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I have also realised the importance of using questions and examples to check understanding continually and to consolidate the information that they have just learnt. I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student’s understanding and technique.
