In my break between my A-level and university intake, I have took up a part time job tutoring in Kumon for student at different levels and as well as providing personal tutor for SPM students for mathematics subject. As a graduate engineer, I have a strong foundation in mathematics and science up to A-Level.
I prefer a face to face tutoring as I believe a better understanding and clearer explanation could be deliver through this approach. I have been teaching during my PhD study in university, and I believe that my experience in the university will help me in handling students from different levels.
My aim as a tutor is to make sure student can understand the subjects and keep him/her interested in the subjects. Understanding and interest will keep student focus and make the learning process easier. Interactions between student and tutor during classes are very important as well in creating a comfortable learning environment. In the beginning, I will test the student's understanding of the subjects, then I will arrange the class materials based on his/her needs. I will use diagram or visualisation whenever appropriate so that student can actually "see" the subject clearly. Visual always helps human to remember more easily as compared to just listening. I would encourage students to ask questions in the class and make sure students can actually understand what he/she has learnt. Students can even ask questions about his/her homework, but I will not do the homework for students. Prior to the exam, I will also prepare students for it by going through homework or past year papers to check the student's knowledge.
