I would run a demo class in the beginning to gauge the level of the student to know which teaching technique to use. If a student is competent with the subject and requires only tips for exam preparation and writing, I would become a mere facilitator and encourage self directed learning with frequent assessments by me. If the student needs more guide with the subject, I would slow down to meet the student's speed and teach according to the student's learning preference; if they were a visual/auditory/reading or writing/ kinesthetic learners.
