 Ukulele is of special interest because of its amazing suitability for children. They are small and fairly inexpensive which is a great bonus for parents on a tight budget, and even better, they are fairly easy to learn to play.

Within a few minutes a child with the finger dexterity to press the strings firmly against the finger board can learn their first chord and play a couple of Nursery Rhymes already familiar to them. Like the piano, one can accompany themselves and sing at the same time.

Ukulele is very portable and playing chords is easier than picking out a melody. The Ukulele is easier for children than the guitar because it only has four strings. For a small child, there is also the bonus of the smaller size, which makes it easier to hold.

Within a few weeks, children can learn a few chords and sing dozens of songs with them. They can take their uke with them wherever they go. It can be a great confidence booster, playing for friends and even total strangers as they gather around to sing along. It happens!

Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for ages 12 and above (no maximum age) and 5.30 to 6.30 for ages 7 to 11.

Covers basics of the staff, clefs, pitch and duration of notes, time and key signatures, intervals, tempos, chords (triads) and common musical terms.

Ideal for students beginning Music Lessons so it does not interfere with teaching time, those who sing in choirs and those who wish to learn more about music sight reading and reading music.

SONGWRITING FOR BEGINNERS – Thursday 8pm to 10pm  - Now open for registration

Are you an aspiring songwriter who would like to learn how to compose a potential smash hit or just to write for enjoyment but don’t really know where to start? If so why not join us on Thursday evenings to learn:

• Song Analysis - what makes a good song? (or a bad one)
• How are lyrics put together?
• Do we start with chords or melody?
• How is emotion used in song writing?
• Common chord progressions and how to use them.
• Basic music theory for songwriters.
• Major or minor? Setting the music and lyrics in the right context.
• Recording your work.
• Song writing as a team.

And much else.

The course is an immersive experience with demonstrations, talks and practical exercises as well as break-out and creative brainstorming sessions. Each term, selected songs will be featured in our termly student showcase with the potential of getting your completed songs in front of record producers and other media. 

Requirements to register

• Minimum age 14. No maximum age.
• You should have at least a basic working knowledge of either guitar or keyboard which you should bring with you.
• You should own and bring along a laptop computer or tablet (Windows or Mac – Not Android).
• You should be familiar with at least 4 chords and the names of notes but do not need to have extensive music theory. This will be covered as part of the course.

Course Leader

The course is led by Paul M Baker, the Principal of BAPA. Paul is an award winning composer and has written pop, classical and jazz songs for musical theatre, church worship and vocal groups. In the UK he worked with George Michael, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey and brings decades of experience at international level to his craft.

Course students, when proficient in song writing may choose to continue in one or more of the following streams:

• Composing and arranging for orchestra, band, vocal groups and contemporary ensembles.
• Music Technology, music notation software, sequencing, editing and music production.
• Advanced music theory.
