SONGWRITING FOR BEGINNERS – Thursday 8pm to 10pm  - Now open for registration

Are you an aspiring songwriter who would like to learn how to compose a potential smash hit or just to write for enjoyment but don’t really know where to start? If so why not join us on Thursday evenings to learn:

  • Song Analysis - what makes a good song? (or a bad one)
  • How are lyrics put together?
  • Do we start with chords or melody?
  • How is emotion used in song writing?
  • Common chord progressions and how to use them.
  • Basic music theory for songwriters.
  • Major or minor? Setting the music and lyrics in the right context.
  • Recording your work.
  • Song writing as a team.

And much else.

The course is an immersive experience with demonstrations, talks and practical exercises as well as break-out and creative brainstorming sessions. Each term, selected songs will be featured in our termly student showcase with the potential of getting your completed songs in front of record producers and other media. 

Requirements to register

  • Minimum age 14. No maximum age.
  • You should have at least a basic working knowledge of either guitar or keyboard which you should bring with you.
  • You should own and bring along a laptop computer or tablet (Windows or Mac – Not Android).
  • You should be familiar with at least 4 chords and the names of notes but do not need to have extensive music theory. This will be covered as part of the course.

Course Leader

The course is led by Paul M Baker, the Principal of BAPA. Paul is an award winning composer and has written pop, classical and jazz songs for musical theatre, church worship and vocal groups. In the UK he worked with George Michael, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey and brings decades of experience at international level to his craft.

Course students, when proficient in song writing may choose to continue in one or more of the following streams:

  • Composing and arranging for orchestra, band, vocal groups and contemporary ensembles.
  • Music Technology, music notation software, sequencing, editing and music production.
  • Advanced music theory.
