My approach is more to making sure my student has an acceptable degree of grammar and sentence structure understanding before I proceed with writing. I prefer to use a whiteboard and marker pens to demonstrate my teaching. I also focus on past years' papers and repeated drilling exercises to make sure my student is familiar with the righ technique to answer questions.

First of all, I would go through all syllabus and see which part the student lacks. For me, it is the most important thing as we could see where the real problem is. When we know where the student is having weakness, we shall see the paths of obtaining understanding e.g. doing intensive tutorials, quizzes.
