Tutoring Approach

The key to success in subjects such as Economics and Business is to have a thorough understanding of the material. Memorising definitions and concepts word for word is highly discouraged. Questions are constantly changing from year to year, as such, making sure that students have the skill to apply theory to different questions and scenarios is my top priority. I identify major key points and concepts of a chapter, and methodically explain them step by step with breaks in between for questions. I make concepts easy to understand by using relevant and relatable examples. I sprinkle in real life examples, current events and updated statistics as well, which students can use to enhance their answers, especially for essay or extended response questions. Stickman drawings are my forte, and have been proven to be exceptionally useful for students to understand complicated topics such as bonds and investments. Combining relatable examples, current events, stickman drawings and plain English explanations, students are able to grasp concepts with ease. My students are exposed to a variety of past year questions, usually after every topic. They are drilled with every section tested in their exams, commonly multiple choice questions (MCQs), short and extended response questions. I provide detailed feedback on homework completed by my students, mainly for subjective or open-ended questions, and explanations for any confusing MCQs. Closer towards exam periods, I carry out time-based practice, to hone my students’ time management skills, which then allows them identify areas of weakness. I cover topics which the student is not too confident in, so no time is wasted explaining something they already know, unless requested. My lessons are a safe space where students are encouraged to ask questions, ensuring there are no gaps in their knowledge of the subject. I have my own resources and materials, accumulated throughout my teaching career which will be provided exclusively to my students. A key benefit my students have is that they can message me at any time to ask for help outside our tuition sessions.

Bachelor of Arts in Economics

Experience

Victor attended Taylor's College Sri Hartamas and studied IB, and SMK Damansara Utama for SPM. He obtained 41 points for IB, inclusive of 7's in Economics, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as perfect scores for the Reading section of the SAT (800), and 800 for Mathematics Level 2, Chemistry, and Physics. After a turn of fate, he then attended University of Chicago's Bachelor of Arts Economics program (highest number of Economics Nobel Prizes in the world) and became a beneficiary of the now discontinued JPA Ivy League dan Setara Scholarship (RM1.2 million value).  Having worked in consulting, published journalistic articles, as well as working in human rights and having traveled to many different countries across the world, Victorhas a strong interest in foreign affairs, the interconnectivity of knowledge, and in developing the talent of everyone he meets and encounters.  He is incredibly passionate about teaching students, even more passionate about learning, and most passionate about helping his students to become learners that want and desire to learn with a purpose in their lives, and has assisted students in achieving their dreams and changing their lives by attending their dream universities and attaining their desired scholarships. Victor enjoys reading extensively, to the point that he was featured in the Star Newspaper in 2019 for reading 350 books in the course of a year to date (including Les Miserables, War and Peace, and Crime and Punishment) before completing 400 over the course of the year.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that when it comes to education, there is no compromise.

That's why I am committed to providing the longest-term value possible to you as you pursue your educational dreams, and will provide you a tailored educational experience from start to finish that suits your immediate needs and addresses your goals from the outset.

I am intentional about creating an enjoyable and productive educational experience in which my students are motivated to succeed and understand WHY they want to succeed. It's not logical to force a student to study - they have to want it. That's what I firmly believe.   In my lessons, I help my students to develop critical thinking skills through two-way conversations that help them to use their material effectively, examine the practical implications of what they are learning in the real world, and to enjoy every single second of the process. During my one on one classes, most of my students ask me for specific topic reviews, and students also frequently come to me with practice exams, which I solve on the spot and explain to them.   My online classes are usually the same, although they are conducted over Skype and make use of resources like screen-sharing and a digital whiteboard. In both cases, my approach consists of a mutually agreed schedule that is worked out between me and the student that is designed for efficiency, allows us to assess our progress, and helps students to understand rather than memorize by rote.  Students usually request for 2-6 hours per week prior to their exams, and before sessions, we will come up with a plan of what they would like to cover or require assistance with. Having said that, my experience with different exam varieties and student learning styles is extensive, and my tutoring approach tailors to each student accordingly depending on the student's needs first and foremost.   In both my in person and online classes, I use a combination of Google Drive, Skype, and Zoom in order to populate materials to my students as well as solve problems live.  For scholarship interview and admissions preparation, I arrange mock interviews for my students during which I quiz them both on technical and behavioral interview questions, and also help students with tailoring their applications and consistently show their best side to admissions committees through a series of informational interviews and application review sessions. If you engage my services, you will secure my commitment to provide you or your child a custom-made and well-tailored educational experience from start to finish.   Admissions Counselling & Skills Mentorship Students under my guidance have been admitted to the following schools: Boarding School admissions: Andover, Exeter, the Lawrenceville School University admissions: University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Yale University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, University of California, Imperial College London, Kings College London, Princeton University. Competitions: HKIMO (Gold), Kangaroo Mathematics Competition (Gold), Malaysia Earth Science Olympiad (Gold), SEA Games participation (2x)

Farah Izzati

Out of all the tutors I've encountered throughout my life, Victor is one of a kind. Aside to being a great mentor, he is very knowledgeable in various fields, from Mathematics to Economics and even Psychology just from the love of reading books (he is also resourceful too). He inspires me to dream big and go through the distance, based on his motivational talks we had once in a while and always motivates me to do my best in what I do. I respect him a lot for his understanding, patience and dedication as a mentor to ensure that his students excel in their studies and that's what I admire most. He open my eyes to a lot of things in life with respect to the importance of education and knowledge that will help optimize my chances to achieve my goals. He's definitely my mentor and my life coach! Thank you Victor :)
