Tutoring Approach

The key to success in subjects such as Economics and Business is to have a thorough understanding of the material. Memorising definitions and concepts word for word is highly discouraged. Questions are constantly changing from year to year, as such, making sure that students have the skill to apply theory to different questions and scenarios is my top priority. I identify major key points and concepts of a chapter, and methodically explain them step by step with breaks in between for questions. I make concepts easy to understand by using relevant and relatable examples. I sprinkle in real life examples, current events and updated statistics as well, which students can use to enhance their answers, especially for essay or extended response questions. Stickman drawings are my forte, and have been proven to be exceptionally useful for students to understand complicated topics such as bonds and investments. Combining relatable examples, current events, stickman drawings and plain English explanations, students are able to grasp concepts with ease. My students are exposed to a variety of past year questions, usually after every topic. They are drilled with every section tested in their exams, commonly multiple choice questions (MCQs), short and extended response questions. I provide detailed feedback on homework completed by my students, mainly for subjective or open-ended questions, and explanations for any confusing MCQs. Closer towards exam periods, I carry out time-based practice, to hone my students’ time management skills, which then allows them identify areas of weakness. I cover topics which the student is not too confident in, so no time is wasted explaining something they already know, unless requested. My lessons are a safe space where students are encouraged to ask questions, ensuring there are no gaps in their knowledge of the subject. I have my own resources and materials, accumulated throughout my teaching career which will be provided exclusively to my students. A key benefit my students have is that they can message me at any time to ask for help outside our tuition sessions.

Unusually, my two degrees are very different. My BA in Theology is from Kings College London. My Master in Film is from Middlesex University, London.

My professional career was mostly spent working as an Executive Personal Assistant in the worlds of Public Relations and Communications. Many of my clients were startups, and other clients included the Archbishop of Canterbury. These were very vibrant and demanding places to work. They were all project based, which suits my personality as I enjoy preparing for them building up to an event.

In all my roles I was often the resident 'English Expert'. I would review documents, edit speeches, offer advice to colleagues and generally give feedback on written or spoken English.

As part of my work in Communications I was involved in Media Training. My seniors would interview clients on camera and give them feedback they would use when they appeared on TV or radio.

During my Master degree in Film, I developed this interest and now have understand how to operate the camera as well as script or edit what is said. Video interviews are now very important in aspects of many environments. Working on presentation skills, written, spoken and recorded is really important.

Outside work I supported many charities with my time and skills. These ranged from teenage homelessness through to running a Nationally recognised Disaster Fund that provided support to the victims of bombings in London.

Despite my professional credentials, I'm a very relaxed and patient, and really enjoy supporting people as they progress with their projects and ambitions.

A couple of random things: I was a twice British Champion Powerlifter (a long long time ago) and I have a Black Belt in Kung Fu lol

Relaxed is the key word, but that doesn't mean unfocused. What is important is that we both work out what our goal is then I take the lead in devising a plan to get you there.

To keep you motivated, the materials we use have to be interesting. With this in mind, I'm open to using newspapers, articles, transcripts, film scripts, books, novels, songs and anything you find interesting as a base for our work.

There will be times when studying is a grind, and we can't avoid that, but every project worth completing needs to be difficult at times.
