When it comes to new students, the first lesson will always include simple exercises involving both tutor and student. By doing this, the student will settle down quicker and becomes less anxious when it comes to classes; at this stage, it is also an opportunity for both tutor and student to get to know each other. The next step will be a 90 minutes past paper test. This gives me a rough idea of the student’s strengths, weaknesses and time management when it comes to examinations. Teaching is never an easy job; especially when it comes to handling young children. A private tutor has to be very patient and must put ego aside; not all tutors can do this. Being an open minded individual with experience handling young children in the past as a sitter, I have learned to be patient when it comes to handling a young child. Motivation is important when it comes to education, if the child is not being motivated, then the child gets bored and becomes lazy. By rewarding good behavior and putting effort into their work, it makes the child push that little harder. Children aged from 5-7 are at the primary age of learning. This is the period when their brain acts as a sponge, and it is extremely important to instil habits of reading in their daily life as well as feeding onto their curiosity as their brain starts to develop and craves for knowledge. As I can converse with all three languages, the children I have taught are very warm towards me. That will ultimately help the child's learning curve in the upcoming classes, for sure. Furthermore, I have the patience and care to find the right approach for your child as every child is different. In the first few classes, I would encourage parents to kindly not be in the presence of the class and children will tend to seek for confirmation or support from parents if they are nervous or scared. In conjunction with that, it would be greatly preferred for students to have a proper study area with quiet ambience to maintain the child's focus. Young children are easily distracted and as mentioned below, their attention span is rather short. I will also keep an eye on their posture as a child's sitting position plays a part as well in their learning curve. For English, my lessons are filled with games, picture dictionaries and sequenced pictures to allow the students to feed on their excitement for their next lessons. We will cover all of listening, writing, speaking and most importantly, reading. However, I strictly encourage children to have a maximum of 60-90 minutes of class maximum as a child's attention span is very short. I do not wish to bore the child and affect his/her learning curve. As for Mathematics, children aged 5-7 will be learning with puzzles as well as picture activities to help them understand. Children aged higher will either proceed or work towards progressing functions beginning with addition, subtraction, multiplication and then division. Of course, these will all depend on the child's ability given their previous classes attended, if any.

I'm a male Chinese private tutor when I was studying Language and Linguistics (Spanish major) at the University of Malaya. I taught English, Science, and Mathematics to primary school students. I taught the above-mentioned subjects for 2 years from 2014-2016 until I secured a job in 2017. In 2020, I quit my job and became a freelance translator. And this time around, I picked up a part-time job as a tutor again and I've been teaching for another 2 years, stacking my experience up to 5 years now.

Of course for kindergarten or primary school students, I will lead my students through a series of books approved and recommended by the Education Ministry as following the syllabus would be the most promising route to take. I would even add on additional information that I obtain from the Internet if the student needs more attention in some parts of the language. But if the student were to have special needs, we can of course change the course and take a less conventional route, we can stray away from the syllabus and go by how the subject is learned in general, starting by polishing up one's basic in all the mentioned subjects, and the RWLS (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking) skills in English. I will help the student by teaching them the technique to score in exams, but I would emphasize more the general improvement in the student's language mastery. It is like teaching them to fish instead of just giving them the fish directly. Because I strongly believe what improves one's mastery in a subject is the basics and this applies to all subjects. And when our Education Ministry announced the abolishment of UPSR and PT3, it is a bold move that they took to change the nation's education philosophy. We are moving from a rather result-oriented education system to a less result-oriented one. So scoring techniques will become less and less important in children's academic journey while picking up the knowledge that they need will become more important at the same time. So go back to my previous point, strong basic concept mastery is the foothold that all children should have before moving forward to picking up more advanced knowledge. In general, I try to understand the general path that our government is taking, and try to shape my way of teaching according to the new system.
